Ingmar Bergman

Sad to hear that Ingmar Bergman has died. When I was in England the first time around, he was regarded as one of the great ‘new’ film directors. I saw most of the films that were available for viewing, but I’ve forgotten a lot of the details now. Though the mood of the films has stayed with me, in many instances. The joy of Wild Strawberries and its strange dreams, the weirdness of the movies such as Persona, the exuberance of Smiles of a Summer Night. I’ve seen very little of his movies since I came back to New Zealand, except for his delightful production of The Magic Flute. I think it’s time to track these wondrous movies down on DVD and see them as an adult viewer rather than a naïve young man!
